A journey which began nearly five years ago has resulted in Marion General Hospital (Marion, IN) achieving Magnet designation for excellence in nursing services by the American Nurses Credential Center's (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®. It is one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can achieve.
Designation as a Magnet hospital places MGH in a very select group of healthcare organizations, both in Indiana and nationwide. MGH joins only eight other hospitals in Indiana and approximately 4% of all hospitals in the nation who have achieved Magnet recognition.
“This is an exciting time for the nursing department and MGH,” states Bernie Wallace, R.N., MSN, CNO. “I am so proud of what our staff accomplished; they are to be commended for their dedication to their patients and for their true understanding of the meaning of excellence.”
The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services. Applicants undergo a rigorous evaluation that includes extensive interviews and review of nursing services.
“This is the nursing profession’s highest honor,” furthers Susan Smoker, R.N., Magnet steering committee co-chair. “It is our way of telling our patients they can count on receiving the highest quality care.”
Research shows there are clear benefits to hospitals that are awarded Magnet status and to the communities they serve:
- Healthcare consumers have more confidence in the overall quality of a hospital if it has achieved the level of excellence established by the Magnet Recognition Program.
- Magnet designated facilities consistently outperform other facilities in recruiting and retaining nurses resulting in increased stability in patient care and patient satisfaction.
- Because quality nursing is one of the most important factors in enlisting high caliber physicians and specialists, Magnet status becomes an attractive force that extends to the entire facility.
“The Magnet distinction confirms the outstanding patient care we deliver here each and every day,” says David L. Callecod, president and CEO. “This designation shows we are committed to excellence at MGH and illustrates our status as a premier acute-care hospital.”
It takes total commitment from everyone within an organization to be recognized as a Magnet hospital. Other departments must support nursing staff in order for the designation to be achieved.
“This confirms not only our commitment to outstanding patient care, but our entire organizational commitment to excellence through our information technology, commitment to ethical standards and overall support from all departments,” furthers Paul Usher, CFO.
By being recognized as a Magnet hospital and following industry leading healthcare standards and accountability – Marion General Hospital will continue to provide extraordinary care to the entire region.
