Grant County Government spent approximately $575 in providing service to each citizen in 2006 according to a report from the Department of Local Government Finance released May 1, 2007 setting Grant County well below the statewide average for county government of $965 per capita.
In comparison to surrounding counties Grant County was also well ahead in per capita spending. In 2006, Blackford County spent approximately $750 per capita and Delaware County came in barely under $1,000 per capita.
Marion came in below the statewide average of $2,650 for per capita spending at $1,115. Marion compared well to neighboring cities such as Anderson at $1,659, Kokomo at $1,418, Muncie at $1,550, and Richmond at $3,642. Other towns below the per capita government spending median of $1,300 were Fairmount, Fowlerton, Jonesboro, Matthews, Swayzee, and Sweetser.
“These numbers are just one more great reason in a list of many reasons for why people should come and live and work in Grant County,” said Judy Fitzgerald, vice president of marketing for the Grant County Economic Growth Council.
The purpose of the report was to provide an annual compilation of each political subdivision’s total amount of expenditures per person. Financial information including expenditure detail by fund and by classification was collected from each county, township, and city/town. The Federal Census Bureau and public libraries provided the population data.
“We see these numbers as proof that our local elected officials are doing a great job of working together to keep costs and taxes down for their citizens,” said President of the Grant County Economic Growth Council, Jeff Southworth. “They are making decisions that will ultimately aid in positive economic growth for Grant County as a whole.”
As required by Indiana Code 6-1.1-33.5-7, the Department will file the report with the Governor and Members of the General Assembly. Individuals may view the report on the Department’s website at www.in.gov/dlgf or may request a copy by writing to the Department at: Department of Local Government Finance, Division of Data Analysis, 100 North Senate Avenue, Room N1058, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
